Welcome 2022!!

Welcome 2022!!
Happy New Year!

The Old Craft Store is very excited for upcoming year!
We have lots of programs planned. I will be blogging about events as they come up.
You can view our calendar for January, Febuary, and March in the recent blog post The Class Schedule.

The first program we have going on in 2022 is the Saturday Block of the Month Sampler!
This is one of those BoMs where you pay for the first block then bring it to the store completed on the designated day the following month and receive the kit for the next block free! So, in theory, you can have the fabric for 12 blocks for just $10! And by December you can have a completed quilt top!

We are offering one pattern:
"Close to my Heart Sampler"
finished quilt is approximately 65" x 65"

You have a choice of either of two colorways and on different Saturdays...

On the 1st Saturday of the month (January's will be available on the 8th)
the colorway is reds and creams.
If you sign up for this colorway, you must bring your completed block into The Old Craft Store on the following 1st Saturday to receive the next block kit free.
The fabric that's flat on the table will be used for the 1st and 3rd borders.

On the 3rd Saturday, the colorway is bright purples and aquas.
If you sign up for this colorway, you must bring your completed block into The Old Craft Store on the following 3rd Saturday to receive the next block kit free.
The floral printout between the blocks on the table will be the 1st and 3rd borders.

Here are the rules for this program:
"Close to my Heart" Saturday BoM Sampler
finished quilt is approximately 65" x 65"

You chose which Saturday works for you.
To get started, the registration fee is $9.24 plus tax = $10.00

You may opt to get a "Just in Case" Kit for $12.50. This is for just in case you have an oops while cutting.

Through the BoM you will receive fabric for all the pieced blocks. If you would like to complete the quilt as pictured in the pattern, you can choose to purchase a Finish-Out Kit for $96.95. The Finish-Out Kit includes fabrics for the sashings, setting triangles, and the borders.

You may chose to have the blocks mailed to you for $1.50 shipping fee. (Keeping in mind the kit is free only if you bring in the previous month's completed block in person to The Old Craft Store.)

You credit card will automatically be charged IF:
- someone else picks up your block for you
- the previous block is not completed
- you block is not picked up on the Saturday you signed up for.

We are so excited to get this 2022 BoM started! If you have more questions or to sign up over the phone, please call us at The Old Craft Store (972) 242-9111.

The year 2022 is also bringing Temperature Quilts to The Old Craft Store!
Susan, Doris, and Naomi are gearing up to start on January 1st.
Temperature quilts are fabric recordings of the daily temperatures. They can start at any time of the year and go on for as long as you choose to make blocks. We are hoping to start with January 1st and continue through Dec 31.
We have each searched the internet for ideas on temperature quilts. There really are many ways to go about making a temperature quilt! I encourage you to do an image search for "temperature quilts" and you will see a plethora of ideas!

We decided we will all use the same colors.
With bright red for the hottest temperatures and a deep dark purple for the lowest.

It's difficult to know exactly how much of each color will be needed, so we are starting with a fat 1/8th bundle. (When we determined how much to start with, we hadn't yet picked what block design. More yardage will be needed as the year progresses.)

Each fabric is a range of 3 degrees, starting with 23 degrees and below all the way up to 104 degrees and above! I'm sorry my photo is blurry. If you are interested in a color chart, I'll have copies at The Old Craft Store!

Susan, Doris, and Naomi have chosen different block patterns. I don't have actual photos yet because we haven't started our blocks, but here are some examples of what we are going for.

Doris will be using a flying geese block. The geese will be the high temperature and the background will represent the low.  She will be turn the geese upside down if it rains (or snows) that day!

Susan has chosen to make houses!
the door will represent the low temperature for the day and the walls will represent the high.
She may also change the sky color to indicate precipitation,

Naomi is opting to English Paper Piece framed hexagons. The center hexi will represent the low temperature and the frame around it will represent the high. She will either applique or embroider a shape in the center of the hexigon to indicate precipitation that day.

Doing Temperature Quilts is very much an impromtu project for us. We are going to be learning as we go. We would love for you to join us and share your ideas! Come by the store and have us take a picture of your progress or tag us in your social media posts!

More to come soon! Be sure to visit often to hear about upcoming classes and clubs!
Happy New Year!!

Stash Builder doubles as a Stash Buster

Before I get started, here's The Old Craft Store hours for Thanksgiving weekend:

Wednesday, November 24: OPEN 10 a.m. - 2 p.m.
Thursday and Friday, November 25 & 26: CLOSED
Saturday, November 27: OPEN 10 a.m. - 4 p.m.
Sunday, November 28: OPEN 1 p.m. - 4 p.m.

Christmas Fabric Sale
30% off, one yard cut minimum
Nov 27 & 28

This month's Stash Builder at The Old Craft Store is classic Black & White. And since we are getting close to the holidays, we added Red for some color.

When we curate a group of fabrics for the Stash Builder, we don't have a project in mind. We are hoping to spark our customer's creative energies and inspire something fun.

I like to give an example of what can be made with the Stash Builder.  I searched the internet for "black and white quilts" and "black white red quilts."  Wow! There is a lot of fantastic quilting talent out there.  The search provided a lot of eye candy! There is no shortage of ideas - Log Cabins, Braided table runners, Disappearing 9-patch, appliques.... Now that I think of it, the Bow Tie block would've been perfect to capture the "black and white classic" feel.

And yet, I went a little more challenging...
A Pickle Dish inspired me.
This is in a Kaffe Fasset book called "Quilt Romance."

I thought this pattern would be very striking in black, white and red.
But pickles are green!
That idea sealed the deal for me. I had to make it!
I gathered greens from my stash and got started.
I figured out that a 5" x 9" piece of green was needed per pickle wedge. Some greens were only used once, some were used twice.
I also added reds from my stash for the corners and another red print from my stash for the centers.

The piecing is taking a little longer than I expected. Probably because I am using 1/8th yard pieces and have to piece the corners together, plus there is a lot of marking and special cutting involved.

One block is displayed at The Old Craft store. I'll add more as they get completed.

Do you mix and match fabric collections with your stash?
Adding pieces from my stash to a purchased collection made my stash feel fresh again! Let us know what works for you!

OK! Let me tell you about other things we have going at The Old Craft Store!

"Spring Sprouts" an Applique BoM at The Old Craft Store!!

The Old Craft Store is starting an Applique Block of the Month!!

"Spring Sprouts"

Designed by: Laundry Basket Quilts

This beautiful quilt finishes at 42" x 53".

(scroll to the end for sign-up information)

Inspiration for our kit comes from a Pinterest pin.
I (Naomi) really liked the bright colors and green sashing on the outside pieces.

Spring Sprouts pinterest pin

I chose a soft green for the outside sashings, a light pink for the inner sashings, and a cream "Spotted" for the applique block backgrounds.

Here is a sampling of the fabrics I have chosen for the flowers and leaves. More are likely to be added.

Some of these fabrics will also be used for the joining stars in the sashing.

The pattern is written so that you may use your favorite applique technique. Directions for fusible applique, machine applique, and hand applique are given.  Also, reversed pattern shapes are provided for fusible applique. (Just as a little note, I am stitching the store sample with back-basting needle turn.)

Kits are limited.

Registration Fee: $4.50

Begins on 2nd Friday, November 2021 through October 2022.

$17.95 will be charged to your credit card on 2nd Friday for 12 months.

OR: You may choose a One-time Payment of $169.95

You may also opt to have the kits shipped to you for $4.50/month.
